As opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals and humans, artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines. Intelligent agents, or any system that can understand its surroundings and adjust its behavior to increase its chances of success, are the focus of AI research. Historically, the phrase “artificial intelligence” has been used to refer to computers that exhibit and simulate “human” cognitive skills that are often associated with the human mind. Since then, leading AI researchers have argued that this definition is too restrictive, and instead explain AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally.
